The career confusion caused by the current massive layoffs of academics at all levels of public education is understandable in that the pink slips were never supposed to arrive in such numbers. However, the situation is running its course and the result will undoubtedly be fewer public teaching careers finishing out their durations in the physical classrooms of community colleges, high schools, colleges and state universities. The flip side, so to speak, to this dubious situation, at least for the suffering academics, is to realize that the academic labor model is now irrevocably altered and that the new direction is to seize the career opportunities that result of learning how to teach for an online university. The distance education technology available to academic administrators at the post-secondary level of education makes is relatively easy to instigate many online bachelor degree programs and online masters degree programs and to distribute access to them to any college or university student that can use a personal computer to log onto the Internet. This ease of use means that there is less reason than ever to continue pouring academic budgetary funds, which are becoming less robust every passing day, in the maintenance of physical college and university classrooms. As a result, traditional adjunct college faculty members barely making a definable income by delivering post-secondary instruction on a traditional university or college campus and recently unemployed secondary educators with graduate degrees, a Ph.D. or masters degree, can and should learn how to teach online for an online university that offers online bachelor degree programs and online masters degree programs.

Of course, teaching online for just one post-secondary academic institution will not be enough, nor should it be enough, in this day and age of changing economic dynamics. The alert and aggressive academic will understand that employment as a post-secondary instructor is a moving target, and the successful prospective online adjunct instructor will recognize the market direction of higher education. For example, new and returning college, university and community college students are willing and eager to employ their personal computers and their knowledge of Internet navigation in order to earn online business degrees, an online mba degree or an accredited online accounting degree. Further, the prepared online adjunct instructor will easily know that administrators of colleges and universities cannot act as swiftly as their counterparts in for-profit colleges in the sense that bureaucratic hesitancy necessarily slows down any decision making process. This means that for-profit colleges, which offer enormous numbers of online college courses to their student populations, are an excellent source of online adjunct faculty positions, but also that the public colleges and universities are making great strides towards offering every conceivable area of post-secondary instruction in the form of an online bachelor degree and online masters degree. So, the potential for developing a full time online teaching schedule filled with six to ten, or more, online college courses lies in viewing post-secondary education as a whole industry rather than a fragmented, isolated area of potential employment for the intellectual with a graduate degree. The best search strategy for identifying online faculty positions with an online university is to visit the websites of the thousands of post-secondary institutions on the Internet. This may sound like too obvious a recommendation, but it is it is still not a daily part of many educators effort to build an online teaching portfolio.

An online faculty opening can be very attractive because it indicates a path to the future of post-secondary education for a college teacher in the market for extra income. It is of paramount importance for any college adjunct to understand the emergence of distance education. The online university degree is the wave of the future, and it makes a great deal of sense to try to find the online college faculty positions that accompany the growth of this part of the academic universe. The fact of the matter is that every online class needs an online adjunct instructor, and the online adjunct is the most attractive college teacher of choice these days, at least from the administration’s perspective, because online adjunct can be hired cheaply for each course and dismissed as the supply and demand dictates every day. The upside to the boom in the online faculty opening paradigm is that technology makes it possible for a teacher to work for multiple online bachelor degree programs, online nursing programs or for schools that offer the masters degree online without having to physically travel to the various campuses. This release from the need to psychically transport oneself from college classroom to college classroom is of tremendous importance because it creates an additional income stream for the college teacher who figures out how to manage several online professor positions at one time. This extra income stream is actually the cash savings that result from not having to use a personal motorized vehicle to arrive at the college campus. It would be a mistake for any college teacher to think this is an insignificant sum of income, this savings resulting from not having to purchase gasoline many times during a given month, and an online faculty opening can certainly provide this savings.

Online Faculty Opening Found

For college instructors, this is a very trying time. The vast majority of college teachers are teaching on an adjunct basis. This generally means they are teaching college students English, math and history day in and day out at traditional college campuses, and it also means they are not earning much money at all because most community colleges, colleges and universities are funded by state budgets and right now those budgets are under tremendous pressure. Further, it is a historical fact that when state budgets are under pressure, the post-secondary institutions that are funded by the state monies are the first to feel the budget cuts. There are any numbers of well documented instances of traditional adjunct having to travel miles between campuses, and it is generally the rule that an adjunct can only teach two or three courses at each campus. This creates an economic problem for college teachers who adjunct.

Even in the most densely population urban centers there are just so many physical colleges and universities. This limited amount of college teaching venues and the physical and financial costs of having to travel between the campuses can create a real drain on the incomes of the traditional adjuncts. This is simply not the case with online adjuncts holding multiple online adjunct instructor positions. The very best way to go about finding and applying for any online faculty opening is by using the cold calling method. This search method requires an amount of dedication to an organized application process, and it also requires the college teacher applicant to put up with a less than sterling return of positive replies offer a online adjunct faculty employment, but it has the appeal of actually paying off in the long run.

Online Faculty Opening Method

The first step required of any college adjunct teacher who wants to teach online college classes is to assemble the application materials. Along with a strong cover letter, it is a good idea to have copies of all unofficial transcripts, and this definitely includes graduate transcripts. Compile a package of information that can be submitted at one time, and the application process may be just simply e-mailing your application package. In other cases, it may be a matter of actually writing in our application information into a fill-in form. There is almost always an e-mail address that will permit you to send along extra information such as unofficial transcripts of your graduate work. The idea is to blanket each and every community college, state college and state university with your application material, and this is quite easy to do since all post-secondary schools have a web site with an application link somewhere on the site. If this cold calling approach is maintained by the alert college instructor, it is highly probably that eventually an online faculty opening will appear and the adjunct life will take a turn for the better.

If college instructors have been paying attention to the recent upswing in the numbers of online college courses, they should also be aware that there is a great need for qualified academics to fill the online adjunct faculty positions created by this upswing. It should go without saying that the reason there is an upswing in online adjunct reaching jobs is because there is a tidal wave of new and returning college students arriving on college campuses across the country, and the reason they are showing up is that they are experiencing underemployment and unemployment. College teachers are also finding themselves downsized in droves, and this downsizing is often on top of subsistence pay and increasing class size. Happily, there is a viable solution for any college instructor with a graduate degree in one of the core academic areas, such as English, math, psychology, art history or psychology (actually any class required of first semester college students regardless of discipline). That solution is to teach online college classes for online college degree programs. Many college instructors, however, have taught college classes for traditional community colleges, state colleges and state universities for so long on the ground that they are confused and often intimidated by the process of finding and securing online college classes. There really isn’t any secret to finding online adjunct jobs. Basically, a college instructor seeking online adjunct teaching positions should start applying to every academic institution with a web site, and there isn’t one institution of higher learning that doesn’t have a web presence. Every school’s web site has an application page. Granted, that application page is sometimes difficult to locate on the web site, but it is there waiting to be filled in. The simply math of the situation guarantees that if you, the college instructor with a graduate degree in English, math, psychology or history, apply for enough online college courses to teach from a computer, you will wind up employed by more than one online degree program.

Online College Courses Pursuit

Seeking online college courses to teach is really nothing more than cold calling potential clients. Many college instructors have a great deal of trouble seeing their skill set as a commodity to be traded on the open market. This confusion is entirely understandable since the process of earning a graduate degree is managed in large part by people who have not had to market themselves to the general public. In the end, there is a complete disconnect between what is taught about the financial viability of a graduate degree, and this is especially true in the liberal arts, and what is now required by the economic landscape developing under the public. This disconnect is having serious consequences college teachers across the board because the available budget sums are being reduced on a daily basis. That means there will be larger college classes to teach without corresponding salary increases for the extra work required by the increased student population. The intelligent response to this set of circumstances is to learn how to market your skill set to a wider marketplace. A college instructor with a graduate degree in one of the core academic area can offer his or her sill set to every school that provides online programs to their students. The best way to go about discovering this larger academic marketplace for your intellectual skill set is to seek out community colleges, state colleges, state universities and for-profit academic institutions that offer an online counseling degree, online associate degrees, nursing degrees online or any university degree online. The most important aspect of this approach to increasing your income as a college teacher is to identify online college courses you can teach from a computer.

Online College Courses Findings

Finding online college courses to teach is not all that difficult once the search strategy is understood. Think about the higher education system as a marketplace. Today, it is unimaginable for an academic institution not to have a web site. Search out each school’s web site and dig out the application page. Keep in mind that each school will probably have a different type of application page. Regardless of the type of application page, it is important for college teachers to fill out and submit each and every one. Applying for online college courses to teach is a numbers game. The more applications you make the better the chances of receiving a positive response. If any college teacher doubts the value of this cold calling in the marketplace, and if there is any question about the earnings potential of holding online adjunct faculty positions, then a quick glance at the number of online college courses being offered by all academic institution should answer those questions quite well. Start today by using your computer to find academic institutions that have accredited online degree programs and make your teaching online courses application.
